Early Voting - Coweta County, GA style

We live in the small but growing sub-burb of Atlanta called Coweta County. It's nice - but I think it has grown too much for me. Let me explain.

We had planned on performing our civic duty of voting this past Saturday morning (early voting). We arrived at the annex just at 9:00AM. It was Saturday and our county was open for early voting (9:00AM ~ 12:00PM). I parked downtown next to the old courthouse and clock/bell tower. We walked the block and a half to the annex. We saw the line emerge from the building turn back towards us on east broad street. It then turned back north and continued down Perry Street. We chuckled as we walked Perry street and turned right on the sidewalk for East Washington Street. The line continued. We walked to the courtyard where we found the end of the line. Remember it was 9:00AM October 22nd. So, it was a bit cool (okay dang cold I tell you - with the wind blowing).

We made a couple of friends while standing in line. The two ladies in front of us were nice. The two couples behind us were enjoyable. We talked and joked as we crept along East Washington. About 30 minutes had past when we made the turn onto Perry Street sidewalk. By this time, we realized that an entrepreneur could make a fortune selling doughnuts and coffee along this line.

Once on Perry street, we was greeted by strong winds. They seemed to be flowing with great strength along Perry Street. We continued to talk while in Line and trying to stay warm. We learned about people's family, their vacations. We learned where they liked to go eat. Where the didn't. We were almost witness to a death defying car crash. We agonized as we watched a lady stand in line in much pain. She had had back surgery only two weeks prior.

As we approached East Broad Street, the sun was up and we emerged from the shade of the building. It was approaching 11:00AM. Our faces started to defrost. Our hands began to be less numb. We stretched in the warmth that the sun gave us. Our conversations turned from breakfast to lunch plans. My lovely wife, Cinderella, had left without eating breakfast. She commented that she thought I was joking about having to stand in line for a while. She was very hungry.

It was 11:30 when we inched our way through the doors of the annex. A man handed us a clipboard with a paper to fill out. 15 minutes later we presented the clipboards with our ID's to the table 30 feet inside the doorway. We thought we were almost there.

"Stand in the line there and stay to the left" was what we heard. We waiting. Surely it was just past that next doorway. NO. 3 hallways,3 turns and almost an hour later we were standing at the doorway where the last gateway held us up. A nice lady requested our papers and ID's again. In return, she handed me a voting card and told me to go through the next doorway.

I took my card and waited for an open booth. I inserted my card and took about 3 minutes to cast my votes. Kind of of upset that so many contest where uncontested.

I pressed "cast ballot" and the card ejected. I handed it to a lady and she in return gave me a sticker. I exited down the stairs and through a doorway that led back to the sidewalk. I waited for my wife and a friend and we were soon headed back to the car. Three and a half hours after arriving.

That's what I call Voting - Coweta County, GA style

Fantasy Football and Softball

Okay - I am 23 points ahead going into Monday night football. I have a running back scheduled tonight and my opponent has a wide receiver. Unless something out-of-the-ordinary happens - I should win. With the win, I will be tied for the lead in my division. That's a good thing. $$$ Money is at stake here.

It was a $50 entry fee. They finally decided on the pay-out structure and $150 goes to division leaders and $250 goes to the overall champions. I am debating on weather or not I can hedge my buy-in by selling off Phillips Rivers or Calvin Johnson to another team. If I could get $30 for either/both, I would be in for $20 and still with a good team. Things that make you go hmmm in the middle of the season. I think I will float the idea across the wire and see what topics it stirs up.

Secondly, my thoughts are on the playoffs. In order to win during the play-off's, you have to have players that are available to score you points. So - it's time I start really focusing on gathering players that I think are on the teams that will make it the deepest in the playoff's. Thus - giving me more available points. A great player on a sucky team (Calvin Johnson) will do me no good in the playoff's. Hopefully, I can dupe someone into a trade for him in the later part of the season. We'll see.

I am not sure if you have noticed the new link on the right side or not. If you haven't, look now---->.
Jennie Finch #27. The most recognizable name and face in softball and the past two summer Olympics is over there. I ran across her blog the other night as Candystick and I was looking around for summer softball camps. The blog is awesome. She takes you along on her life with photos and good humor. She dots in daily life with her husband and child (Ace) along with her travels for softball and public appearances. CRUSHED THEM

In a rebound week in the Fantasy Football league, I crushed my opponent.

Several of my players had good games. Propelling my score to a total of 101.

My opponent on the other hand, had several players perform poorly - his score 49.

That's a win and I will take it. It feels good to win again!

Grandma's Bed and Breakfast at Papa's Lake

A couple of months ago my parents moved from the house where I lived most of my childhood and moved out into the country. Their house sits at the bottom of Fort Mountain. Home of Fort Mountain State Park.

I had been there to help them move. I had taken Candystick up there once while Cinderella was on a business trip. So, this weekend was going to be our first trip to the new homestead as a family. What we found out was - it is our new weekend Bed and Breakfast in the mountains. I have so nicknamed it "Grandma's Bed and Breakfast at Papa's lake"

The home sits on over 6 and a half acres with a 2 acre pond. It is very peaceful and relaxing. With three porches, you can choose which porch suits your needs based on the time of day. The front porch faces northeast and towards the mountain. It's a great place to be in the afternoon as the sun lights up the mountains. The back porch has more of a southward facing direction. A morning cup of coffee as you sit on the padded bench swing will softly bring in the day. It also looks out over the pond. The side porch is idea for the evening cookouts as it is directly off the kitchen. and has a shade tree near.

Here is a photo of my mom enjoying her coffee after church Sunday afternoon on her front porch.

While my mom and Cinderella relaxed on the porch reading and enjoying the quietness, Candystick and I headed to the lake for some fishing. It was slow go at first. However, it didn't take long for the fish to realize we were there to feed them. Candystick ended up catching and releasing 21 Bluegills.

Here she is showing off her catch!

Here she is waiting for that next big lunker.

There is another great catch!

A great view of the lake from the house.

On Saturday night - my mom and dad hosted a cookout/birthday party for my sister. Both my grandparents and my sister and her husband were there.

Here is my mom getting everything ready.

Apple Festival - you didn't think I forgot did you?

We had a blast at this years Apple Festival. There were plenty to do and even more to eat. Of course I tried to capture every tasteful moment. The one thing I was totally excited about and then the greatest let down was the Dessert Candles. They looked great - until I was told I couldn't eat them. Darn!

Here is a table full of desserts - I mean dessert candles. Look at all the detail.

Here is a closer look. $45 for one of these table settings is a true bargain.

Brenda Clark does an outstanding job on these. I was totally amazed! I have been unable to locate a website for Brenda - but with candles like these - It will not take long! Good Luck Brenda.

Food was my main drive. I started with a deep fried Twinkie.

I can't wait to stuff my face!

OKAY - I stuff my face!

next on the docket was nachos - with a side item of friend onion. That's me and my mom and dad - WAVE!

Let's not forget the few bites I stole from my mom's grilled ear of corn.

also about how I followed mom around to see if she could eat all of that apple dumpling.....

With all that food, we had to take a few more laps around the festival. Here are a few shots of Cinderella and Candystick as the begin to grow tired.

Here is a group of travelers.

I didn't get out too cheap with Candystick. She picked out a great looking Georgia Bulldogs purse. Ask her to show it to you - it's awesome.

Last - we took Candystick by the wildlife area. Here she is feeding a small deer.

With that - I leave you with great thoughts of a great weekend. And soon we will take another trip to stay at Grandma's Bed and Breakfast at Papa's Lake.

Softball

The girls loaded up and traveled to Fayetteville, Ga to play in a tournament.

The girls did an excellent job. Cadystick was up to bat in one of the games with bases loaded. She hits it into the outfield for a bases clearing triple.

We won the first two game of the tournament and had a bye for the third level game. Our girls were hot and tired by the 4th level and I think they were all ready to go home. We lost and where sent packing. However, the girls did an excellent job and I am very proud of them.

Candystick also won herself an ice cream from me. She can earn ice creams by playing catcher and making an foul ball fly out. She did in the second game. The hitter popped it straight back to her and she caught it. 1 Ice cream for her.

Here are some photos I promised you before.

This one was taken before a previous game.

The next few are Candystick at bat during the tournament.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend - I am going to take a nap - I am very tired!

Fantasy Football Update

Okay...okay... I was the last remaining undefeated team until last week. The mighty have fallen. Down, but not out.

I took a hit last week with 3 of my starters out on bye. It had to happen - and it did. I am back in business this week.

I am against Moral Mayhem this week. I am currently a 24 point favorite. He has two questionable players remaining on his starters. He has Carson Palmer and Chris Perry - both are listed as questionable for this week. If he changes those two out, he will pull close. We shall see.

I have been very fortunate to not have any injuries to my starters. My team is healthy. That being said - I have used that to snap up good players when they were released for bye weeks.

I drafted Drew Brees and Phillips Rivers. I picked Jason Campbell off the wire when a team dumped him after a poor performance in week 3. I was able to pick up Amani Toomer last week. This week I picked up Michael Bush of Oakland and the Jets Defense when they were dropped for the bye week. I am not using these players. However, I am using the strategy of keeping them as my reserve players in order to keep them off others starting line ups. I really do think this gives me a slight edge.

I routinely review the positions each week looking for highly rated free agents that have been squeezed off someones team for a bye or a short term injury. I am not sure I will be able to improve much beyond where I already am. I have established multiple players at each position that are sometimes more highly ranked before some teams have a player ranked.

I suggest anyone participating in Fantasy leagues to remain vigilant and review the option of all players and positions consistently. This not only allows for you to pick up some decent talent - but keeps that talent off others rosters.

Trading. I don't do it. If someone is wanting to unload a player, usually in the end they end up having to drop that player to free agent in order to pick up the player or position they are needing. I just wait. If it's an improvement for me, I will make the decision to pick them up. Then I get to choose who I drop for them and not some opponent.

Have fun all - Candystick has a softball tournament this weekend in Fayetteville. I hope to get some good pictures. I know its her and not me you want to see on this blog.

2008 Georgia Apple Festival

Click here for the event website

One of the best things about growing up in the north Georgia hills was the annual Apple festival in Elijay, GA. This event is loved by so many. I love it for the Food. This is an event that I let loose on any diet rules and eat everything insight. It's a fall fair on food steroids.

I will be attending the great event while visiting my parents in neighboring Chatsworth. We will make it a family affair. I am sure they all will look at me in disgust at all that I eat!

I am sure I will eat lots of apples.

Apple fritters

Apple pies

BBQ Chicken

Sausage

Deep fried Snickers bar

Deep Fried Twinkies

Elephant Ears

I can't wait - come join us at this years great event - October 11th, 2008. See me eat like a pig!

All the photos were stolen - thanks people.
